We are the Humboldt State University Journalism Club, a group of undergraduate students engaged in journalism activities outside of the classroom. This blog is a journal of our club experiences.
We plan exciting activities, so join our email listserve to stay connected.
On Halloween weekend in 2015, ten members of the club traveled to Austin for a journalism conference and interviewed zombies.
In March 2014, the journalism club attended the Society of Professional Journalists conference in Hawaii.
In February 2013, eleven members of the club traveled to San Francisco for a journalism conference and visit to the Center for Investigative Reporting.
In November 2011, eight club members attended a political journalism conference in Washington, D.C. We met CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, toured National Public Radio, visited the Newseum, and met several political journalists who praised the use of social media in the mainstream press.
In October 2010, three club members attended a business journalism conference in New York City. We visited the Associated Press, AOL, The New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
In October 2009, five club members traveled to the same business journalism conference in New York City. We visited The New York Times, CNN, Fox News and got a behind the scenes look at The Late Show with David Letterman.
In fall 2008, seventeen members of the club visited Washington D.C. for a political journalism conference. We spent two days analyzing the presidential election with journalists fresh from the campaign trail. They told us that it was often tough to get access to top candidates John McCain and Barak Obama.
Outside of the conference that year, the nation’s capital was buzzing in anticipation of changes in our country’s leadership. We visited the White House, Capitol building, Library of Congress, National Mall monuments, Newseum, Botanical Garden, Smithsonian museums, Georgetown and NBC news headquarters. In all, we spent five days in the nation’s capital. For most of us, it was the first time we have ever been there. It was an experience we will never forget and a new tradition started with the Journalism Club: get to conferences in the world’s news hubs of New York and Washington, D.C.
